Puberty is a process, not a race
Puberty is a period of physical development influenced by hormones. Timing and the order of changes vary. Growth spurts, body hair, acne, changing body shape, voice changes, menstruation, erections and new feelings may occur at different times for different people.
Feelings can change too
Mood, privacy needs, attraction and curiosity can shift during adolescence. Questions are normal. Reliable adults, qualified health professionals and age-appropriate educational materials can help young people make sense of changes without shame.
Hygiene and health
Gentle external washing is generally enough for genital hygiene; avoid harsh products or internal cleansing that may irritate delicate tissues. Menstrual products should be used according to product instructions. Seek medical advice for severe pain, very heavy bleeding, concerning symptoms or puberty changes that cause worry.
Safety and trusted support
Young people deserve safety, privacy and age-appropriate information. If an adult or another person pressures someone into sexual activity, asks for sexual images, or makes them feel unsafe, tell a trusted adult or appropriate local support service.
