Sexual Desire and Arousal

Understand desire, physical responses and why experiences vary.

Desire and arousal are not identical

Desire is the wish or interest in sexual activity. Arousal can involve physical changes and psychological attention. They may occur together, separately or not at all. Arousal is an involuntary body response at times and should never be interpreted as consent.

Many factors influence desire

Stress, fatigue, mental wellbeing, medication, health conditions, hormonal changes, relationship context, safety and life events can affect desire. There is no universal amount of desire that every person should have.

When to get support

Consider speaking with a qualified clinician if a change is sudden, persistent, distressing or associated with pain, other symptoms or medication concerns. Avoid unverified supplements and guaranteed-performance claims.
