How to Use Condoms Correctly

A practical checklist for safer condom use.

Before use

  • Check the expiry date and make sure the packet is intact.
  • Open carefully with fingers; avoid teeth, scissors or sharp objects.
  • Use a new condom each time and for each act of sex.

Using an external condom

  • Put it on before genital contact, when the penis is erect.
  • Check that it is oriented to roll down; pinch the reservoir tip to leave space and reduce trapped air.
  • Roll it to the base. Use a compatible lubricant if needed.
  • After ejaculation, hold the condom at the base while withdrawing, before the erection subsides.
  • Remove carefully and dispose of it in a bin, not a toilet.

Important cautions

Do not use two external condoms together or combine an external and internal condom, because friction may increase the chance of breakage. Oil-based lubricants can weaken latex; check the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions. If a condom breaks or slips, seek timely advice about pregnancy prevention and STI testing based on the circumstances.

Important: This checklist is general information. Read the specific product instructions and consult a healthcare professional if you need advice after a condom failure.
