STI Testing: Questions to Ask

Updated October 14, 2026General education

Understand testing timing, privacy and follow-up before an appointment.

Testing depends on the situation

The right STI test and timing depend on possible exposure, infection, symptoms and the test used. There is no single schedule that suits every person. A qualified health professional or testing service can recommend the appropriate tests and explain when repeat testing may be needed.

Questions you can ask

  • Which infections should I test for based on my circumstances?
  • When should I test, and will I need repeat testing?
  • How will results be shared and protected?
  • What happens if a result is positive?
  • Should a partner be tested or treated?

A negative result has limits

A negative result may not rule out infection if testing is too early or the test does not cover the relevant infection. Follow the testing service’s advice and seek care for symptoms or new exposure.
