A Safer-Sex Conversation Checklist

Updated October 14, 2026General education

Simple topics to discuss with a partner before sexual activity.

Talk before the moment

Planning a conversation can reduce uncertainty and help both people make informed choices. It should never be used to pressure someone into activity.

  • What are we both comfortable with, and what is off-limits?
  • How will we check in and stop if either person wants to?
  • What contraception or barriers do we want to use?
  • Are there STI testing or exposure questions we should discuss?
  • What will we do if a condom breaks or contraception fails?
  • How will we protect each other’s privacy?

Respect the answer

Consent can be withdrawn at any time. A partner is allowed to say no, change their mind or choose not to discuss something. Safety and respect come before completing a plan.
